Can you still 404 the target page to get rid of the Penguin label?

Second question, you used to say that it was possible with previous versions of Penguin that you could 404 the target page and possibly get rid of the Penguin flag that way. Now I understand it’s working as a label. Gary Illyes mentioned it’s working as a label on the link. So can you still 404 the target page to get rid of the Penguin label?

JOHN MEULLER (Webmaster Analyst from Google):

I think Penguin label is probably overstating it in the sense that we don’t label individual links and saying, oh, this is Penguin bad or something like that.So Penguin is a general web spam algorithm. But in practice, what happens when you 404 the target page is that link falls out of our link graph. So anything that was associated with that link, which could be good or bad, will disappear from our link graph and won’t take effect on your site on those pages.
