Client’s website was possibly penalized for duplicate content/doorway pages five years ago. Website has now been redesigned in the past three years and Search Console is still finding 404s in thousands. According to Search Console, they’re linked from the old sitemap, which does exist. Is this a problem?

JOHN MEULLER (Webmaster Analyst from Google):

It’s not a problem. So sometimes we run across thousands or hundreds of thousands of 404s on a website and we’ll keep retrying them over the years. And that’s not something you really need to worry about. We had an issue recently where we started crawling a lot more 404s than we usually do on a lot of the really old stuff where some sites were seeing thousands or hundreds of thousands or even millions of 404s in Search Console. But even that is something where we’d say, well, these are 404s, we can deal with that. It’s like a part of the web, we don’t have to do anything special.
