Are images in XML sitemaps a good idea?
JOHN MEULLER (Webmaster Analyst from Google):
We actually double checked with the team on this this week. And they do still pick up images from image sitemap files. So specifying them in image sitemap files like that is always a good idea, or at least still since we just checked recently. In general, what I’d recommend doing, specifically with lazy loaded images, is make it so that when we render the page, we at least find a link to that image, even if the image itself isn’t rendered, but that there is at least a static link to that image so that we can understand this image is embedded in this place on this page, even if it’s not shown automatically by default for lazy loading. So that’s one work around that you could do there if you’re using lazy loading on individual pages. Yeah, that’s what I’d recommend there.
