What will make Google index run faster? HTML markup or the sitemap?

I was wondering which markup is fastest one is using the actual marker or the sitemap file, will the Google index faster using the HTML markup than the sitemap?

JOHN MEULLER (Webmaster Analyst from Google):

It should be the same. With responsive web design, the desire for creating engaging mobile experience is separate to desktop using the same code. Wondering whether Google assigns less importance to certain pages, depending on how the menu changes on both? At the moment, we focus on the desktop version for indexing, because that’s the version that you have a rel=canonical set to that we think most users are going to see anyway. So that’s what we’ll focus on for indexing. I could imagine that, over time, maybe it’ll change where if we see most users are actually using mobile phones, then maybe we should be using the mobile version for indexing. I’d recommend making sure both of these are actually usable properly, so that you have a proper menu on both of them that we could crawl the mobile version and pick up all of those changes if we needed to.
