Instead of having that top section with the subcategory that looks like a part of an HTML sitemap, would it be useful to use a select box that just select one of those subcategories and it goes right to that page?Would it not be considered a link if there’s a select box?

Depending on how you implement it, of course.¬†If it’s something– I mean, I’ve seen people do this with CSS, where they have essentially normal links on the page. And with CSS, it looks like a drop-down, or like this menu structure where you hover over it or you click on it and it folds out the submenus. That’s essentially equivalent for us
to having those on the page. With regards to usability, that’s something¬†you probably want to test on your side. That’s not something that would affect us. One way that probably wouldn’t work so well is if this is a drop-down and we can’t really recognize which URLs are being pointed at with this drop-down. So if this is like a drop-down that’s created with JavaScript that just has IDs somehow in the JavaScript, a user selects one of these, and then there’s some fancy JavaScript on your back end that figures out which URL is involved with that, then that’s probably not something where we’d been able to treat it like a normal link. Because we essentially have to have Google bot click on all of the possible options to see what URL shows up. And I don’t think that’s something that we’d do.
