My position in Search Results has been fluctuating a lot. I experienced an 80% drop in mid-July to mid-August, followed by a one month recovery when Penguin launched. I have an incident last November where implementing HTTPS caused some pages on my same IP to get cloned to another domain.

Then I had the same 80% drop. And six days later, my site recovered for five days
.And now it’s been back up for three weeks. And I’m just wondering what happened here.I did have an incident last November where implementing HTTPS caused some pages on my same IP to get cloned to another domain, but I got rid of that.

JOHN MEULLER (Webmaster Analyst from Google):

I’d probably need to take a look at the site specifically to see what might be happening there If it’s just a matter of HTTP and HTTPS, then that wouldn’t be playing a role here. If that happened last November and it was a technical issue, then that wouldn’t be playing a role here either. My general gut feeling when I see sites that are fluctuating in and out like that is that our algorithms are just not sure where to place the site, mostly with regards to the quality of the site. And they’re just not sure is this something that we should be showing very well in the Search Results because it’s really fantastic content, or is this something that is not so good and maybe we should be showing other stuff instead. So if you’re kind of on that edge, then the one recommendation I have there is really make sure that you’re not on that edge anymore– that Google has a clear understanding of your site. And if you want that understanding to be that your site is really, really fantastic, then really try to find a way to take a step forward and really significantly improve the quality of the site overall so that our algorithms, when they look at this, they say, well, this is clearly a fantastic site. We should clearly be showing it on top of our Search results, rather than fairly far down.
