We have an e-commerce site, and on our product pages we wanted to add links to related products. Will this help add value to the page, and is this a good idea? If so, is there any particular way to do that?
JOHN MEULLER (Webmaster Analyst from Google):
So at first glance, you might think this is similar to the previous question, but I think this is more about cross linking within the same website. So that’s something that, from my point of view, is a really good thing to do. On the one hand, it makes it easier for users to find related products within your website. On the other hand, it makes it easier for search engines to crawl through your websites. So it doesn’t have to crawl all the way top to the category page again, and then crawl down to the individual products. There’s kind of this connection between those products as well. And it does give a bit more context to us. So if we can recognize that these are related products, then that helps us to better understand what this individual page kind of means in the context of your whole website. So that’s something I’d definitely recommend doing. For blogs, for example, there are plug-ins that help do that to create related links within your blog across individual blog posts. That’s perfectly fine. I think that’s a good approach, and helps users, helps search engines.
