What should we do if we gradually lost 60% Google traffic and visibility in one month due to a core algorithm update?
JOHN MEULLER (Webmaster Analyst from Google):
Reduce index count, improve user experience, add new quality content, wait for a new core algorithm update, et cetera.” So one thing I wouldn’t recommend doing is just leaving your hands off and waiting for something to change, because while things always change on the web, just not doing anything is not really a great strategy for making sure that a future change will go positively or in your direction. So this is something where I’d really recommend kind of taking a step back and thinking about what you need to do to significantly improve the quality of your website overall. And sometimes that means reducing the number of indexed pages, maybe removing cruft that you’ve collected over the years. Sometimes that means focusing on the design, on the user experience. Sometimes that means focusing more on the content. All of these things essentially add up to one website. And we look at a lot of different factors to try to figure out how should we kind of show this website in search overall. So this is something where I wouldn’t focus on purely technical issues and try to fix it that way, but rather try to take a step back and get feedback from peers. Get honest feedback from people that will tell you that this looks terrible and this is completely broken. So that’s the kind of feedback that you want to receive so that you have a better understanding of where the bigger issues are with your website, or where you could work to significantly take things up to next level.
