When we move to HTTPS using 301 redirection, will we have a ranking drop when this shift?
JOHN MEULLER (Webmaster Analyst from Google):
So we pass page rank for 301 redirect. So it’s not the case that there would be anything that would get lost just because it’s a 301 redirect. In general, whenever you make site structure changes, which could be going to HTTPS– which could be changing the URL structure– moving to a different domain– you will see some fluctuations for some time. So it’s not something where you’d say, well, I can just switch from this to this, and nobody will ever notice a difference in Search. It will just automatically happen. You will see some fluctuations for, I would say, a couple of weeks, maybe longer, depending on the website as we reprocess, re-index, re-crawl everything on the website. In the long term, it should settle down to, essentially, the same state.
